Last month, Hamilton investigated the seemingly contradictory policy of gas expansion by the Liberal government. At the same time that Ontario is legislating ambitious targets to reduce GHGs and rightly focusing on the shift away from fossil fuels through its Climate Change Action Plan, the government is steadfast about retaining and expanding natural gas use. Natural gas makes up a significant portion of the emissions in our province – buildings represent 19% of Ontario’s GHG emissions, and about two-thirds of that comes from gas. Yet in response to media reports alleging that the government was planning to ban the use of natural gas to heat homes, Premier Kathleen Wynne immediately assured the public that it will continue to play a critical role in the energy mix of Ontario.
