TORONTO, ON – The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) welcomes today’s unanimous adoption of the TransformTO climate strategy by Toronto City Council, and looks forward to working with the City and stakeholders to turn the visionary plan into reality.
“We applaud today’s decision by Mayor Tory and City Council to unanimously approve TransformTO and renew Toronto’s climate leadership role,” said Mary Pickering, TAF’s VP for Programs and Partnerships and project co-chair for TransformTO. “Implementing TransformTO will not only cut carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 but also boost public health, local jobs, and social equity in our city.”
The TransformTO plan is the result of more than two years of in-depth modelling, public engagement, and expert input. Co-led by the City’s Environment and Environment Division and The Atmospheric Fund, the project received support from a broad range of civic groups, organized labour, and members of the business community.
“TransformTO will succeed if the City partners with community stakeholders, businesses and other levels of government to mobilize resources and investments,” Pickering added. “Through collaboration, Toronto can unlock benefits like billions in energy spending savings and thousands of new local jobs. We now call on the provincial and federal governments to help us refine, fund, and implement this important climate plan.”
