In an effort to reduce Toronto’s carbon emissions, TAF is launching an exciting new initiative. Starting on April 1, we will distribute water carbonation devices (like SodaStream) to each city household so they can turn Toronto’s water into a carbon sink.
TAF has calculated that if each of Toronto’s 2.7 million residents use these devices, Toronto’s carbon emissions will be reduced by more than 1,100 tons. Each carbonation device will come with a carbonator bottle with 410 grams of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), extracted from Toronto’s air using a new carbon capturing technology developed in Saskatchewan.
Plans are also underway to pair Toronto’s Deep Lake Water Cooling project, which was co-financed by TAF, with a Deep Lake Carbonation project. Injection of pressurized CO2 will turn Lake Ontario into a temporary carbon sink – and a bubbly experience for Toronto’s swimmers, kayakers and boaters alike.
Engineers are still working hard on long-term solutions to contain the CO2 bubbles in both our tap water and Lake Ontario. Regardless, TAF is forging ahead with this project to underscore Toronto’s climate leadership at this crucial time – even on short-term carbon reduction measures. Cheers to that… and a Happy April Fool’s Day!
