Toronto, ON — Julia Langer, CEO, The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) made the following statement in response to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s announcement of a new federal zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) regulation, released today:
“The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) supports the proposed ZEV sales targets as a solution to increasing carbon emissions and air pollution from transportation in Canadian cities, and as an antidote to the increasing price volatility of fossil fuels. TAF has advocated the government to set a sales mandate since the demonstrated success of similar programs in B.C. and Quebec.
“We commend the government for prioritizing this solution to Canada’s ZEV supply challenge. Reducing long wait times for electric vehicles is critical motivation for Canadians to make the switch.
“Beyond the climate and health benefits of more ZEVs on the road, the incremental targets set between 2026 and 2035 will provide the long-term predictability needed by manufacturers and expected by consumers. Confidence in the market set by a sales mandate will help attract critical investments to our provinces and territories. ZEV sales and manufacturing, as well as the enabling charging infrastructure, offer key economic opportunities across the country.”
