January 2018. Government of Ontario. The government plans to initiate a ban on organic waste disposal in landfills in 2022. TAF provided feedback to the provincial consultation highlighting current organics processing issues and recommendations for successful implementation of the organic waste ban. TAF also recommended expanding Ontario’s capacity to capture biogas for energy use (instead of the current practice of flaring). One way to achieve this is through coordination with the carbon offset protocols under the province’s cap-and-trade and voluntary offset systems. Reducing emissions from waste, including food and organics, is a priority under the TransformTO climate plan and necessary to achieve the City’s and province’s emission targets.
