June 2018. Government of Ontario. EnergyCompass.design tool is an energy benchmarking and reporting tool for design-stage building development projects. EnergyCompass.design, or Compass for short, has recently completed a beta-testing period that engaged 16 users from 9 energy-focused architecture, engineering, and consulting firms. This completion report summarizes the work-to-date (as of June 2018) and provides three outcomes of the project: A data extraction script that identifies over 400 key building characteristics for existing programs and standards (e.g. LEED, Toronto Green Standard), an online portal easily accessed by the entire design community in Ontario, and data visualization tools to compare how their portfolio of work compares to the industry at large.
TAF funded the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) to develop new tools for construction energy benchmarking in 2016. OAA then contracted RWDI engineers, one of the leading research engineering firms in Canada, for the technical development of the Compass tool.
