MAY 2020

Major social and economic disruptions like the ones we are seeing today can create openness to radical new ideas. But the foundations of low-carbon solutions are not radical — TAF's work on energy efficiency retrofit demonstrations, for example, uses proven methods and technologies. What's changing now is the scale at which we must adopt these technologies and embed them in our policies and systems. As this window of disruption pushes the movement for a green and just transition to the mainstream, we shift our focus from demonstration to scaling up solutions. Follow our progress as we build new partnerships and clear the way for increased investment in the climate.

LOW CARBON SOLUTIONS: POLICY

We're partnering to build a more resilient Canada.

Alongside 198 other signatories, we want to make sure no sector is left behind in Canada's resilient recovery from COVID-19. We know that now is the time to invest in the clean energy transition, to act quickly to expand existing initiatives and programs that will get Canadians working, and to share that Canada will continue to be a leader on climate and environmental policies throughout the recovery.

Join the partnership calling for a resilient recovery.

The Clean Fuel Standard is a critical carbon-reducing policy, let's get it right.

The Clean Fuel Standard (CFS) would require fuel suppliers to reduce the carbon intensity of their products. It has the potential to deliver 30 megatonnes of carbon emissions reductions by 2030, or 14% of Canada's 2030 climate target.

The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the release of some draft CFS regulations, but the level of ambition and 2022 implementation date have not changed. Alongside other industry and environmental leaders, we sent a letter to the Prime Minister and members of cabinet last month, outlining how a strong CFS can help ensure Canada's clean fuel sectors contribute to economic recovery.

We're calling for the renewal of Ontario's post-2020 electricity demand management framework.

We signed on to Efficiency Canada's open letter in support of extending and improving Ontario’s Interim Framework to conserve electricity. Extending the framework and protecting strong conservation programs is important for reducing uncertainty for electricity customers and energy efficiency sector workers.

LOW CARBON SOLUTIONS: BUILDINGS

ICYMI: Investing in retrofits is no longer an “if” – here’s the “how”.

The buildings sector needs a one-stop-shop, and the timing is right to put one into action. Here are some of our favourite comments on our recent blog post:
  • "We’d all benefit from a deep energy retrofit program on this scale. And a one-stop shop fills the how-to gap that has been holding us back."
  • "You capture the broad benefits of such an approach including perhaps the most significant ones at this moment in time being jobs as well as emission reductions."
  • " ... a perfect reason why the government stimulus should also be channeled to building retrofits."
  • "A badly needed and largely untapped resource."
