JUNE 2020

In solidarity.
Now is a time of suffering and grief for past and present racial injustice, that is evolving into a long overdue time of action and opportunity for change and reconciliation. We acknowledge that there is significant work ahead of us, for all of us, starting now and for the long haul. TAF’s commitment to “multi-solving” recognizes that we will not be successful in achieving climate objectives without also addressing the underlying causes and fundamental needs of people, including equity. We are starting by acknowledging this and seeking to learn more about the communities we are accountable to serve all across the GTHA, and how to be their allies. Through our own work at TAF we will seek concrete ways to increase equity at the same time that we pursue climate objectives. This is a learning process and we welcome your input – feel free to send us an email with your thoughts any time.

Deep Retrofit Diary: Construction re-starts

The world has changed since we hung up our toolbelts at our deep retrofit site in Toronto in March. We're excited to get back to work this week, because we know that the pandemic has made it more important than ever for everyone to have a healthy, comfortable home.

Three newly approved TAF grants are supporting carbon-reducing projects. We're proud to support:

Scaling-up to Zero Emission Transit in the Region of Durham

Durham Region Transit will plan the transition of their bus fleet to zero-emission technologies, by evaluating data from their pilot of eight electric propulsion buses and four charging technologies.

Zero Emissions Buildings Exchange Concept Development

Passive House Canada will collaborate with diverse industry leaders to develop a hub for learning, research, and capacity building for the green building industry in the GTHA.

Coalition for Clean Fuels and a Clean Fuel Standard

Pembina Institute will continue their efforts to provide leadership on policy solutions, produce research, and coordinate engagement strategies with key decision makers to ensure a strong Clean Fuel Standard for Canada.

LOW CARBON SOLUTIONS: POLICY

GTHA municipalities prioritize a resilient recovery

Municipalities across the GTHA are considering carbon-reducing policies, even in the midst of a challenging time for city leaders. Here are three municipal initiatives we're particularly interested in right now:
  • Hamilton is developing a Community Energy Plan, which will guide the city in reducing emissions, and fostering local, sustainable energy solutions. If you live or work in Hamilton, take the surveys to help the city prioritize their actions.
  • Toronto wants to rebuild from COVID-19 with a more vibrant, sustainable economy. If you live or work in Toronto, take the survey on how you think Toronto should recover and rebuild.
  • Whitby has developed a Green Standard to advance sustainable new development that will go to council next month. Whitby is the first municipality in the GTHA after Toronto to adopt such a policy. Read our comments and letter of support to Whitby council.
